Viewed as a science by its practitioners and as a mystic art by the inexperienced around them, alchemy is a fascinating attempt at studying nature. Originating in the early centuries, alchemy first emerged in ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt. Later on, the practice became popular all across Europe, the Middle East, India, and the Far East. Alchemy symbols have existed for hundreds of years; and, since the beginning of alchemy, alchemists have used symbols to represent different natural elements.

The symbols sometimes contain hints of the qualities the element was thought to have, as well as the history of the element. In essence, alchemy is the attempt of people in ancient times to understand chemistry and how chemical compounds interacted with each other, mixed with mysticism and astrology. Symbols were created to represent different elements, but as alchemists were persecuted, secret symbols were invented. Alchemy symbols were merely the secret language alchemists used to describe their experiments and findings.

Our Alchemy Elements Bone depicts the ancient alchemy symbols for the five classic elements- water, earth, space, air, and fire. We have placed these symbols on the classic bone to symbolize that the classic elements are the source of life and this reality. Alchemy is the purification of our bodies so that they can hold more of this universal energy supporting life.

  • Water is depicted as a simple upside-down triangle. It is viewed as cold and wet and is associated with human intuition.

  • Earth is depicted as an upside-down triangle struck with a horizontal line. It represented physical movements and sensations.

  • Space is depicted as an upward triangle and a downward triangle that overlap, or a six-pointed star. This symbolizes the union of opposites, and it is considered by some to be the symbolic epitome of “as above, so below.” The six-pointed star is about two opposite pyramids. They cannot coexist without the between. Time and space are creating reality at the edge of the balance. Space always takes and time always shares.

  • Air is depicted as an upward triangle struck with a horizontal line. Air is the opposite of Earth. It’s associated with heat and wetness and is viewed as a life-giving force

  • Fire is depicted as an upward triangle. It is the opposite of water in its depiction and it represents hot and dry.
